Collapse of Chuzon Supermarket in Porac caused by several violations —DPWH
A Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) task force has identified several violations that caused the collapse of Chuzon Supermarket after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Porac, Pampanga in April.
According to Chino Gaston’s Thursday report on 24 Oras, the results of the task force’s investigation showed that the collapse of the supermarket was caused by the strength of the earthquake and Chuzon’s numerous building code, workmanship, and supervision violations.
The DPWH found that Chuzon’s building plan did not have a seismic analysis, a test that shows the strength of the design of a structure in the event of an earthquake.
The final composition of the building also failed to follow the reinforcements indicated in the submitted building plan.
Out of the eight cement samples taken from the collapsed building, six did not meet the standard.
Meanwhile, the steel used for the building passed the minimum requirement of the chemical and strength tests.
Chuzon also did not have the necessary documents, permits, and plans.
The task force has recommended the filing of charges against the management of the supermarket.
In a statement, the lawyer of Chuzon said they are yet to study the findings of the DPWH, adding that the owner of the supermarket is not aware of the said violations.
