At least some of the seven killed by the capsize of a dragon boat in Boracay on Wednesday may have fatally hit their heads on rocks, the Philippine Coast Guard said

According to a report by Emil Sumangil on GMA News TV’s “QRT” on Thursday, the victims were part of an 21-member dragon boat team that was practicing for a competition in Taiwan in November.

Their boat was reportedly hit by a strong wave, causing it to overturn.

Task Force Boracay said the people on board the boat panicked and began pulling each other to stay afloat, causing seven team members to drown.

Some of the members of the dragon boat team were said to be lifeguards, while others did not know how to swim well.

The Task Force plans to make the ability to swim a requirement for anyone who wishes to join a dragon boat team.

They also plan to implement a rule that will require all water sport activities to be reported to the Coast Guard.

The Task Force also plans to add more lifeguard stations, rubber boats, and rescue equipment in the area. — Julia Mari T. Ornedo/BM, GMA News
