To protect paradise, Siargao tightens waste segregation scheme

Stricter waste management will be implemented in Siargao island to prevent the garbage problem from causing trouble in the country's premier surfing paradise.

According to a report on 24 Oras by Mav Gonzales, garbage on the island has been piling up at a temporary dump site as the sanitary landfill was not yet operational.

As a temporary solution, the local government of General Luna, Siargao will strictly implement the local ordinance on waste segregation.

Failing to comply with waste segregation scheme can land offenders at least one year in prison or a fine ranging from P500 to P2,000.

Improper waste disposal also has a corresponding fine of P200 to P500 or 1-15 days of community service.

Officials met with garbage collectors on Friday to ensure that the community, including businesses, comply with the ordinance.

"Kailangan na ho natin strictly ipatupad tong solid waste management program natin at isa du'n is yung waste segregation. So we really need the cooperation of business establishments kasi 'yung malalaki hong volumes ng basura, nanggaling ho sa kanila 'yan hindi ho from the locals," General Luna Administrative Officer Peejay Gorgonio told GMA News.

The local government also called on the support of the national government for the landfill to start operations soon.—Margaret Claire Layug/LDF, GMA News
