Ex-barangay kagawad killed in alleged NPA ambush


A former barangay official in Sibulan town in Negros Oriental was shot dead by suspects who identified themselves as members of the New People's Army (NPA) on Friday afternoon.

According to a report on GMA News TV "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon" on Monday, Barangay Enrique Villanueva's ex-councilor Albino Saycon was ambushed on the road by the suspects while on his way home after attending a Christmas party.

Saycon was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

His wife who was with him during the incident was safe.

Before the ambush, alleged members of the NPA have previously broken into the house of Saycon and was looking for him.

The police investigation is ongoing.

Two former and incumbent local government officials were gunned down by unidentified suspects in Cagayan de Oro and Batangas on Saturday.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) previously said that a special operations task force was created to monitor election hotspots in the country as preparation for the upcoming midterm polls. —Dona Magsino/NB, GMA News
