Black bugs swarm barangay in Ormoc City, Leyte
Black bugs attacked parts of Leyte this week, but no damage to crops is expected as it happened a week before the planting season.
GMA News' John Consulta reported on "Balitanghali" on Saturday that thick shrouds of black bugs covered walls, pavement, and some areas in a barangay in Ormoc City .
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) experts said the bugs weaken and destroy plants when they attack, and that the pest usually come in swarms during full moon, which attract them at nighttime, the report said.
But Ormoc City Agricultural Services said that the bug attack would not affect farmers as planting season is still a week away, and they have not yet distributed rice seeds for planting.
IRRI experts advised farmers to raise water levels in their paddies two to three days before planting to drive the bugs away and stop their eggs from hatching. —LBG, GMA News
