Sudipen mayor’s widow now home after ambush in La Union

Sudipen, La Union Vice Mayor Wendy Joy Buquing has returned home after being treated in hospital following the ambush that killed her husband, Mayor Alexander Buquing, and two other people.

The vice mayor sustained injuries in the hand and the head, said a GMA News "Unang Balita" report on Friday.

However, the vice mayor refused to give a statement.

The remains of her husband Mayor Alexander Buquing currently lie at their house, while the bodies of Police Officer 2 Rolando Juanbe and driver Boni Depdepen were also brought to their respective homes.

The investigation continues as to the motives of the killing.

Mayor Alexander Buquing, his wife and their two companions were in a pick-up truck when they were ambushed by still unidentified assailants in the municipality of Bangar.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said that the suspects might be part of a professional hit by a gun-for-hire group.

PNP spokesperson Benigno Durana said such incidents tend to increase as the elections draw near.  —Jamil Santos/NB, GMA News
