6 dead, including children, as Ompong-caused landslide buries house in Bontoc
At least six people perished in a landslide that buried their two-storey home as Ompong wreaked havoc in Bontoc, Mountain Province over the weekend.
According to Raffy Tima's report on "24 Oras," among the bodies that have been recovered in a 12-hour rescue effort over the weekend were those of five-year-old Klyde and twelve-year-old Kierstein Mae Minimo.
Their parents Lanibeth and Darwin Minimo, and grandparents Orlando and Prisca Baggay, both 67 years-old, were also among the fatalities.
Rescuers were able to rush two minors, Glendalyn and Darren Lee Minimo, to the Bontoc General Hospital.
The family's home was only one of many homes destroyed as Typhoon Ompong battered Northern Luzon over the weekend.
The fierce rains also triggered a killer landslide in Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya that crushed a family's hut.
The rescue effort led to the discovery of a lifeless eight month-old newborn who died along with a two-year-old sibling and their parents.
The severe weather also destroyed a portion of the rice terraces in Banaue, Ifugao, which are treasured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an eighth wonder for the Philippines. —Margaret Claire Layug/NB, GMA News
