Bacoor City in Cavite placed under state of calamity

Cavite province's Bacoor City has been placed under state of calamity due to widespread flooding, affecting over 60 of its barangays.

In a report by Bam Alegre on Unang Balita on Thursday, Bacoor City Mayor Lani Mercado was quoted as saying that heavy rains from enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) in past days have caused flooding in 63 barangays.

More than 20 families have been evacuated due to the floods, the report said.

Some roads, including the Aguinaldo Highway, were submerged in floodwaters, turning them into virtual fishponds, the report added.

Continuous heavy rains battered some provinces in Luzon in past days, as weather disturbances, Tropical Depression Henry and Tropical Storm Inday at the northeastern periphery of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), enhanced the monsoon rains.

Mountain Province

In Bontoc, Mountain Province, a woman was killed and her husband and co-workers were injured when falling rocks crushed the van they were on.

According to Unang Balita, John Tay-og Pelew was supposed to take his wife Luisa and her co-teacher Frauline Poloc Magwa to school when falling rocks crashed on their van.

Authorities rushed Luisa to a hospital but did not make it. Pelew and Magwa were treated for their injuries.

Central Luzon

In Balanga City, Bataan in Central Luzon, evacuees are appealing for help due to lingering floods.

Residents in evacuation centers claimed they lack food and could not go to work.

Disaster response authorities said floodwaters in parts of the city may take two weeks to subsided.

In the town of Dinalupihan, also in Bataan, a retaining wall of a subdivision collapsed due to incessant rains that also brought floods to seven barangays of the municipality.

In the province of Bulacan, the Obando Central School was flooded as well as some barangays of Obando town.

At 4 a.m. this Thursday, Storm Inday was spotted some 840 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It has continued to enhance Habagat as it stayed almost stationary on its exit path.

State weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday morning that Inday will continue to enhance Habagat that will affect Luzon. —Jamil Santos/LBG, GMA News
