Newly elected barangay captain in Batangas gunned down


A newly elected barangay captain in Laurel, Batangas died after he was gunned down in San Jose, Batangas by unidentified suspects, according to a report on Unang Balita on Tuesday.

Demetrio Mendoza Deomampo was driving when the suspects on board a motorcycle approached and fired at him.

The suspects fled immediately.

Deomampo was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

He won as barangay captain of Barangay Buso-Buso in Laurel town in the May 14 elections.

Authorities are investigating whether the killing was politically motivated.

Ilocos Norte

Meanwhile, two men aged 19 were standing in front of a tiangge in Laoag, Ilocos Norte when a 15-year-old boy stabbed them.

The victims bore stab wounds on their back.

Police said the suspect took a bottle and hit the face of one of the victims before he stabbed him.

The other victim was about to stop the suspect but the latter stabbed him instead.

The suspect immediately fled but was cornered by police in a follow-up operation.

He denied that he stabbed the victims, saying there was another person with him who committed the crime.

The suspect was previously arrested due to involvement in illegal drugs.

Still in Laoag City, the driver of a cement mixer was found dead by his co-workers.

Police said the driver's co-workers thought he was still sleeping and so they went to wake him up.

No foul play was suspected.

The cause of death of the driver is still being determined. —KG, GMA News
