Vinta causes heavy Cagayan de Oro flooding; 780 families evacuate
Some 780 Cagayan de Oro families or roughly 1,500 people were displaced by floods caused by Tropical Depression Vinta, which made its way across Mindanao on Friday.
According to a report on GMA News TV's "State of the Nation with Jessica Soho", Cagayan de Oro river waters rose past critical levels, reaching around 10 meters.
Floods, which was several feet high in some areas, washed away houses, flooded establishments, and submerged a number of the city's bridges.
Neighborhoods were also severely damaged by debris and mud from the flooding.
The local government hoped to clear affected barangays of this debris and allow the thousands of residents to return to their homes safely by Christmas Day.
According to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, 61 out of Cagayan de Oro's 80 barangays were considered "highly susceptible to flooding."
GMA News Research found that there some 600,000 people, 92 percent of Cagayan de Oro's population, resided in these 61 barangays. — Margaret Claire Layug/DVM, GMA News
