Cops ambushed by suspected NPA rebels in Surigao del Norte

A group of policemen were ambushed on Sunday morning by suspected members of the New People's Army in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, according to a report on Unang Balita on Monday.

Police Superintendent Diomedes Cuadra, Jr., chief of the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) Surigao del Norte, said they were on their way back to their headquarters around 10 a.m. when at least 15 armed men led by an "Alyas Jun" fired shots at them in Barangay Trinidad.

The police fired back and were backed up by responding policemen. However, the suspected rebels withdrew.

The PPSC troops then used a drone to locate the rebels and another gunfight ensued, but the rebels escaped.
