Ombudsman sacks Malvar, Batangas mayor over anomalous lot purchase
The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the dismissal of the mayor of Malvar, Batangas, over her alleged role in the anomalous procurement of a lot owned by her children.
According to a report on GMA News’ 24 Oras on Thursday, the Ombudsman removed Mayor Cristeta Reyes in connection with the administrative charges of grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service she is facing.
The report said the case against Reyes stemmed from her approval to purchase a lot for the construction of the Santiago National High School in the municipality.
The lot, however, was allegedly owned by her children, which is a violation under government procurement rules.
The report said Reyes’ supporters have started to flock the town’s municipal hall to express their opposition to the Ombudsman's orders.
Reyes has since expressed dismay over the charges against her, saying the purchase of the lot was made with the best intentions.
A copy of the Ombudsman resolution ordering the local chief executive’s removal from office has yet to be given to media.
Vice Mayor Alberto Lat will replace Reyes, the report said. —Joseph Tristan Roxas/KBK, GMA News
