Rain-induced landslide kills 2 in Taytay

Two persons were killed in a landslide in Taytay, Rizal early Tuesday.

Local authorities identified the fatalities as siblings Jude Pundal, 17 and Justine Pundal, 14.

A radio dzBB report said the siblings died after their house in Hapay na Mangga, Barangay Dolores was hit by a landslide at around 4 a.m.

The incident happened following an overnight downpour in Rizal province due to Tropical Depression Maring.

Elmer Espiritu, head of the Taytay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said that even before the incident barangay officials in Dolores made the rounds of barangays at risk and urged residents to evacuate to safer ground.

Espiritu said that in the future, if residents will not heed their evacuation instruction, they will implement forced evacuation to prevent a similar tragedy. —report from Rod Vega/ALG/KVD, GMA News
