Ex-Binangonan police chief ambushed, survives after seeking refuge in church

A police official on Friday was able to survive a shooting incident after he sought refuge in a church in Antipolo City.

According to a report by Saleema Refran on "24 Oras," former Binangonan chief Police Superintendent Noel Versoza is now undergoing treatment in a hospital after he was hit by a bullet in his left arm.

CCTV footage showed Versoza leaving a gasoline station after filling his vehicle's tank when an unidentified man shot him three times.

Separate footage showed there were two other men riding a motorcycle who followed Versoza. A man with a face mask then gave the signal to the gunman when Versoza was about to leave the gasoline station.

"Binantayan nila... binantayan kasi pumunta pa siya doon 'yung sasakyan. Pagbalik niya dito nakita ko 'yung kamay niya nakaganon sa knapsack. Maya-maya nakita ko na may dumaan na sasakyan, binaril na," a witness said.

Authorities said the motive may be related to Versoza's previous designation.

"Iyon po ang aalamin nating maigi kung during sa term ng kanyang pagkakaupo bilang hepe ng Binangonan, baka may mga nasagasaan silang malalaking ganon, droga," said Superintendent Raynold Rosero of the Antipolo police. —Anna Felicia Bajo/JST, GMA News
