Heavy rains cause floods in GenSan, other parts of Mindanao
Due to continuous rain over the past few days, flooding occurred in General Santos City and other parts of Mindanao, a report on Unang Balita on Wednesday said.
Datu Acad Elementary School in Brgy. Buayan in General Santos City had knee-high flood, GMA News' Jay Sabale reported.
The flooding was due to the overflowing of the irrigation canal near the school.
This delayed the implementation of the Brigada Eskwela 2017 program at the said school. Brigada Eskwela is the nationwide program of the Department of Education wherein teachers, students, parents and other members of society join hands in preparing school buildings and classrooms for the coming schoolyear. This year's Brigada Eskwela started Monday and will end on Friday, May 19.
Sarangani
Meanwhile, in Alabel, Sarangani, the wall of Alegria Central Elementary School gave away after flooding.
The floodwaters reached the classrooms, the report said.
Residences around the school were likewise flooded.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office distributed relief goods to affected residents.
Cotabato
In Sto. Niño, South Cotabato, meanwhile, part of a 100-foot dike was destroyed due to the overflowing of the Allah River.
The matter was immediately reported to authorities to prevent further damage and flooding.
In Tupi, South Cotabato, on the other hand, more than 1,000 residents were affected by floods.
A concrete canal was damaged by the flood.
Some roads were also damaged, making transportation difficult, the report said. —KG, GMA News
