Boy dies of rabies in Mandaue City

A seven-year-old boy in Mandaue City in Cebu province died two weeks after a neighbor's rabid dog bit him in the head last March 8.

GMA News' "Balitanghali" reported Sunday that the victim Joshua Andy Durias, 7, died despite receiving three anti-rabies shots.

The boy's neighbor Rodrigo Mayon, the owner of the dog, admitted that his pet had not been vaccinated for a long time.

Quoting local authorities, the report said that the dog was killed and its head was brought to Mandaue City's veterinary clinic for inspection.

Department of Health records reveal that some 200 to 300 Filipinos die every year due to rabies.

With its present efforts, the agency said that the Philippines will be rabies-free by 2020. —LBG, GMA News
