New sinkhole found in Badian, Cebu

Geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) have discovered another sinkhole in Badian, Cebu this week.

Al Bereador, MGB Region 7 (Central Luzon) chief geologist, on Saturday said the sinkhole was found in Barangay Bugas.

Bereador said the sinkhole was three meters wide and five meters deep.

He said they  have cordoned off the sinkhole and the surrounding area to prevent accidents.

Bereador explained that the regular forming of sinkholes in the town was normal due to the presence of limestone underneath its soil.

Sinkholes appear when naturally-occurring caves and caverns in limestone rock collapse.

Badian has seen a number of sinkholes form in the town over the last few years due to heavy rains.

A sinkhole formed in Barangay Manduyong amid heavy rains brought on by Tropical Storm Seniang in 2015.

In 2014, a 100-meter no-build zone was declared in Barangay Banhigan because of the sinkhole that formed amid heavy rain from Tropical Storm Queenie. —ALG, GMA News
