Political coordinator killed in La Union

A political coordinator was shot dead in Bacnotan, La Union on Monday night.

Police identified the victim as James Salazar, 50, who also works as a jai alai bet collector.

Investigators said Salazar was having a drinking session with his friends in front of a sari-sari store in Barangay Casiaman when he was shot in the head by a lone gunman riding a motorcycle.

"May lumapit sa kanya galing sa madilim, bale doon siya binaril ng isang beses tapos umalis yung gunman sakay ng motorsiklo," said Chief Inspector Fredilex Alarcon Marron, chief of the Bacnotan police station.

Relatives said that the victim has no known enemies.

They suspect the killing was election-related because the victim was working for re-electionist Bacnotan Mayor Francisco Fontanilla as a political coordinator.

Marron, meanwhile, said they are investigating the political angle in the killing. —report from Vic Alhambra Jr./ALG, GMA News
