Red tide alert remains in Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Biliran, Capiz

The coastal waters in the provinces of Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Biliran, and Capiz remain to be positive for paralytic shellfish poison, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) warned on Thursday.

In its latest Shellfish Bulletin dated March 8, the BFAR said that the following coastal waters are positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit:

  • Dauis in Bohol
  • Daram Island in Daram, Cambatutay Bay in Western Samar
  • Leyte
  • Naval in Biliran
  • Pilar in Capiz

"All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the area shown above are not safe for human consumption," the bulletin read.

It cleared, however, that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly. Internal organs such as gills and intestines must also be removed before cooking. — APG, GMA News
