Catarman Airport suffers heavy damage from Typhoon Nona
The Catarman Airport in Northern Samar sustained structural damaged from the strong winds of Typhoon Nona, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), said on Tuesday, citing the Operations Rescue and Coordinating Center.
As of 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, the heavily damaged airport facilities include the Fire Station Building, Terminal Building, CAAP staff house, and three guard posts, Area Center Vlll Manager Danilo Abareta said.
The Terminal Building roof was blown away, according to CAAP.
Partially damaged were the Flight Services Station Tower, Air Navigation Service Powerhouse, weather instrument, signage and perimeter fence.
Power and communication lines are down in Catarman while other airports under Area Center Vlll, comprising Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloaban, Ormoc, Calbayog, Catbalogan, Catarman, Borongan, Biliran, Guiuan, Hilongos, and Maasin in Leyte sustained minor damage, Abareta noted.
Normal commercial operations are expected as soon as the weather improves and clearing operations are done, he said.
Packing maximum sustained winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, Typhoon Nona made land fall in the Bicol region and caused minor structural damage in Area Center V airports that include Legaspi, Naga, Masbate, Virac, Sorsogon, Bulan and Daet airport in Camarines Norte.
After clearing operations are done, all commercial operations will commence, Area Center V Manager Cynthia Tumanut said.
All other CAAP-run airports didn't report any damage, but 64 domestic flights from NAIA were canceled on Tuesday.
PAL Express suspended 46 domestic flights, including the corresponding return trips, from Manila to Masbate, Naga, Caticlan, Legaspi, Catarman, Calbayog, Roxas, Kalibo and Busuanga.
Cebu Pacific canceled 6 flights from NAIA to Legaspi and Roxas. CebGo suspended 10 flights Manila-Caticlan-Manila and Naga, and Skyjet canceled 2 flights to Manila-Caticlan-Manila. – VS, GMA News
