Almost 1,000 tilapia in Abra affected by rising temperatures

Almost 1,000 tilapia in fish ponds are believed to have been affected by climate change in Barangay Malamsit in Penarrubia, Abra, according to a report on GMA’s News To Go on Tuesday.

Fishery owner Romeo Garcia said that almost 1,000 tilapia from his ponds died last week, blaming the extremes of high temperatures during the day and low temperatures at night. Garcia also said that it was possible that a lack of oxygen killed the fish.

A pond where fish died has been emptied of water while water was added to other ponds.

But Garcia is still worried that his fish ponds will still be affected by climate change, especially since the current El Niño is expected to last until next year.

The Provincial Fishery Office has yet to release a statement regarding the deaths of the fish. —Bea Montenegro/KG, GMA News
