Of the 110, 62 needed intravenous drips while 48 were under observation, PPH chief of hospital Dr. Policarpio Manuel said.

Investigators are verifying information the children fell ill after eating expired candy they got from a store outside the school.

Most of the children vomited and fainted. Department of Education officials are also looking into what happened.

The children said they bought the candy before the flag ceremony.

"Candy po. Sumakit po ang tiyan ko. Tapos nagsuka," said one of the students, Donalyn Alegado.

Teachers said they made a room-to-room check to see who ate the candy, then saw many of the pupils vomiting.

"Food poisoning ang tawag natin diyan, usually two to three hours, kahit two hours lalo na kung marami nakkain yan pwede nang maramdaman," said Dr. Manuel.

"Tignan ang sinusubo, kung saan ang pinanggagalingan. Dapat legitimate, ang importante malinis," he added. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
