Dagupan parents, teachers team up to clean school comfort rooms
Parents and teachers in Dagupan City are teaming up to protect pupils from gastroenteritis and diarrhea by cleaning up restrooms in public schools.
Aptly dubbed "Oplan Success," the project stemmed from a summit of the Federation of Parents Teachers Association in the city, GMA Dagupan reported.
Under the program, the stakeholders will procure 3,000 packs of cleaning materials, with teachers being taught on how to properly clean restrooms.
"Dahil isa ito sa cause ng gastroenteritis o diarrhea, na alam natin is national level, mga 25 na bata ang namamatay araw-araw," said city health officer Dr. Leonard Carbonell.
But the parent-teachers associations admitted there are not enough restrooms in the city's schools.
They said that while the ideal ratio is one restroom for 55 students, more than 55 are using one restroom.
Also, they stressed the need to repair restrooms in areas prone to flooding.
"Ang ating CRs ay nababara, especially sa mga flooded area. Minsan ulan lang, nag-flood na gaya ng Bonuan Boquig National High School and Elementary School," said FPTA president Imelda Gonzales.
For its part, the local government will provide assistance in the effort.
"Na mga bagong flush nila ngayon, iba na ang kanilang CR, its already improved," said Mayor Belen Fernandez. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
