Heat turns fish ponds into parched earth in parts of Cebu

The intense heat in past weeks has not only dried fish ponds in some parts of Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu - it has also caused the dried ground to crack.

Residents of Barangay Calawisan in Lapu-Lapu City said this has greatly affected their livelihood, GMA Cebu's Alan Domingo reported Thursday.

Many of the residents called on the local government to help them make ends meet as they can no longer gather and sell enough fish for their daily needs.

"Nawalan kami ng kabuhayan dito," said Nestor Dungog.

For its part, the city government assured the affected residents it would help them.

It said it is looking for alternative means of livelihood for them.

Many parts of the country had been affected by the hot weather, with crops such as corn experiencing stunted growth.

Meanwhile, in Makilala, Cotabato, some fish ponds are also drying up, GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon" reported.
