WATCH: Cops to activate Holy Week security, traffic plans for Manaoag Basilica on Palm Sunday

Starting Palm Sunday, devotees visiting the Manaoag Basilica in Pangasinan may have to bear with stricter security and parking rules around the area.

Private vehicles will no longer be allowed in front of the basilica, GMA Dagupan's Jette Arcellana reported on "Primera Balita."

Tricycles will also not be allowed to park in front of the basilica as part of the Manaoag police's preparations for Holy Week.

Authorities expect thousands of Filipinos to visit the basilica during the Holy Week, especially after the basilica's elevation earlier this year.

"Grabe ang trapik, pati ang tao sobra-sobra ang dami lalo ngayon pinaganda ang church natin dito ... Siguradong dadayuhin ng tao," said motorist Jun Razon.

1-way traffic

Under the Holy Week plans, traffic at Soriano and Rizal Streets near the basilica will be one-way.

"Pag nakita namin na medyo maraming sasakyan mag-close tayo," said Manaoag deputy police chief Senior Inspector Rizalino Suarez.

Police advised the public to avoid bringing valuables that may attract thieves.

They also asked parents to avoid bringing small children who may get lost in the crowd.

Daily Masses start at 5 a.m., with the blessing of the palms on Palm Sunday at 5:45 a.m.
