150 kilos ‘mishandled’ frozen meat seized in Dagupan City market

Some 150 kilos of "mishandled" frozen meat was seized in Dagupan City Thursday morning, following an inspection at a local public market.

The meat was exposed and not stored in a freezer, GMA Dagupan's Mike Sabado reported on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."

Inspectors who checked the Malimgas public market in Dagupan said the exposed meat could be contaminated by microorganisms that can cause disease.

The seized meat, which had an estimated value of P13,000, was buried

The city veterinary office had earlier given vendors one month to make sure the meat they sell is handled properly.

Meanwhile, the local government has set aside funds to buy a lot to build a slaughterhouse to make sure the meat is fresh.

"Siguro I have to go back to the Department of Agriculture ... if they could provide us the slaughterhouse," said Mayor Belen Fernandez.

The vendors got a warning for now, but the city government will conduct daily inspections. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
