Baguio City teacher faces probe for allegedly beating students

A Filipino subject teacher in Baguio City faces an investigation of the Department of Education for allegedly beating at least ten Grade 7 students for being noisy and for not doing their homework from last Friday.

Students at the Baguio City High School narrated their ordeal to GMA Dagupan's CJ Torida in a report Tuesday on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."

"Sinabi niya na-ingay kami. Parang hindi naman totoo. Kaya yun napalo kami sa puwit nang tatlong beses. Tapos nagpa-assignment daw po siya nung Friday ng nobela po. Tapos sabi niya Monday ipa-pass pero hindi rin po namin natapos kaya po pinalo po kami sa kamay po nang tatlong beses," said one student.

Video taken by a student showed the teacher used a broomstick to punish her students.

While the DepEd Baguio City division office investigates the incident, the teacher has been transferred to a non-teaching post.

The DepEd division office said it will submit to their superiors the result of its probe.

"We cannot preempt also the outcome of whatever the actions or disciplinary action they are going to take. If they tell us, direct us to conduct further investigation, then we will do it," said DepEd Baguio City division office head Atty. Agustin Laban.

The school administration said it already reminded teachers on the Child Protection Policy and Anti-Bullying Act, which prohibits physical punishment as a method of disciplining students.

"We have to revisit also our flow communication regarding this child protection policy," said principal Dr. Elma Donaal.

The teacher concerned has declined requests for an interview.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
