Family blames resort for near-drowning in Lingayen, Pangasinan
A 10-year-old child nearly drowned in the pool of a resort in Lingayen town in Pangasinan province Wednesday evening.
Closed-circuit television showed it took at least five minutes for a caretaker to notice the child struggling, GMA Dagupan's Alfie Tulagan reported Friday on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."
Initial investigation showed the child was with an uncle but that no one noticed the child let go of a flotation device.
"Napansin kasi na palutang-lutang na yung bata doon sa swimming pool ng isang caretaker sa isang swimming pool," said Lingayen police duty officer Chief Inspector Christopher Valerio.
The child's relatives also pointed out that no lifeguard was on duty at the time.
"Kung legal yung pool nila, sinasabi nilang may lifeguard sila, bakit nalunod apo ko?" Melchor Castro, the child's grandfather said.
The child was unconscious when rescued, and rushed to a nearby hospital.
Meanwhile, the owner of the resort said swimming in the pool was not allowed at night but that the child's family requested that they be allowed to do so. She added she had reminded the family that children should swim in a smaller pool.
Police are waiting for the child's family to lodge a formal complaint so it can investigate the matter. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
