To remind people of Yolanda: Leyte man names his eatery 'Haiyan Restaurant'
One year after super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated the Visayas, owners of a food stop in Leyte province have named their establishment after the killer cyclone.
But the owners of "Haiyan Restaurant" named their eatery this way as a reminder of Filipinos' resilience, GMA Cebu's Vlad Fernando reported from Tanauan, Leyte.
The establishment at Barangay Bislig had been heavily damaged when Yolanda pounded Visayas last year. Yolanda left more than 6,000 dead in its wake.
"Dalawang buwan matapos ang bagyo, naipatayo muli ang naturang tindahan at sa unang pagkakataon binuksan ito sa publiko," said worker Marivic Versoza.
She added the owners tried to have the establishment reopened in January since there was no food establishment in Tacloban City.
Today, the restaurant is a popular tourist attraction in the area.
Also, Versoza said reopening the establishment sought to provide work for many residents in the area.
"Ginawa nila ng paraan na mag-open at para makatulong din sa mga tao rito," she said. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
