Barangay tanod killed in Cebu ambush
A barangay tanod who was on his way home was gunned down in an ambush by six men in Dalaguete town in Cebu province Tuesday afternoon.
Paterno Aliñabon, 46, was on a "habal-habal" (motorcycle with wooden planks mounted on it to accommodate more passengers) when six men ambushed him in Barangay Jolomaynon past 4 p.m., GMA Cebu's Greggy Magdadaro reported.
The victim was killed on the spot while the habal-habal driver, identified as Andrew Heredia, was wounded.
PO1 Ulysses dela Torre of the Dalaguete police station said the site of the ambush was done in a quiet and dark area.
"Nag-aabang lang sa gilid ng water station ang dalawa sa kanila at pagkatapos nilang tambangan, exit sila papuntang bundok," dela Torre said.
Recovered from the crime scene were 10 shells and two slugs from a 9-mm pistol, and four shells and a slug from a cal-.45 pistol.
The victim's kin believe the ambush was related to his work as a barangay tanod, saying he had stepped on many people's toes in the course of his work.
"Kung may mag-aaway siya ang parating tinatawag, dahil barangay tanod may dala talaga siyang baril pangontra lang kung sakaling mapalaban sa kanyang mga sinasaway," said the victim's brother Andy. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
