NDRRMC: Yolanda death toll reaches 2357; damage breaches P4B mark

As the death toll from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) continued to rise, the estimated damage it caused breached the P4-billion mark on Thursday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said the number of fatalities went up to 2,357 while 3,853 were injured and 77 are still missing.

A total of 1,732,477 families or 8,007,200 people were affected in 8,819 villages in 43 provinces. Of these, 74,246 families or 359,574 people are staying in 1,099 evacuation centers.

Earlier, President Benigno Aquino III said the death toll from Yolanda could be between 2,000 to 2,500, which is lower compared to the 10,000 fatalities previously estimated by Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria.

"Ten thousand, I think, is too much," Aquino told CNN in an interview. "There was emotional drama involved with that particular estimate."

Also in the NDRRMC report, it said that Yolanda also destroyed 130,074 houses and damaged 106,915 others.

The damage caused by Yolanda was estimated at P4,060,044,079.13, including P362,834,761.13 in infrastructure and P3,697,209,318 in agriculture.
