(Updated 10:03 p.m.) A candidate for kagawad was killed and seven were injured after men on a motorcycle hurled a grenade at a house in Zamboanga City where a meeting was being held Monday evening.

"Ito sa Barangay Ayala sa Zamboanga City. ... May dumaan na motor na sakay ng (dalawa), naghagis ng granada sa meeting," Zamboanga City police public information office head SPO2 Alex Mabalot said in an interview on dzBB radio.

According to a separate report from the Zamboanga City police, Elvic Gregorio, a candidate for kagawad in Barangay Ayala was killed on the spot in the blast.

Police meanwhile identified the injured as Ayala barangay captain Diosterides Libredo, kagawads Alex Macapili, Edgar Enriquez, and Darlene Padernal.

Mario Bucoy, Daniel Carpio, Arsenio Agustin, and Vita Ebol were also listed as injured.

Police said they are not discounting the possibility the explosion was related to the coming barangay elections on November 25.

Barangay elections were moved to Nov.25 because of security concerns. Many schools in the city that would have been used as polling centers were also still being used as evacuation centers after the Zamboanga City crisis.  — JDS, GMA News
