19 killed in Zambales landslides – military


(Updated 6:51 p.m.) Nineteen people were killed while two others were missing after landslides believed to be triggered by heavy monsoon rain hit several towns in Zambales province on Monday,  military officials said.

1Lt. Yvonne Ricarforte, civil military operations officer of the Army's 24th Infantry Battalion, said nine of the fatalities were retrieved at Wawandue village in Subic town, four in Aglao and Banalawan villages in San Marcelino town, and one in Malaybay village in Castilejos town.
 
Five other people died in another landslide incident in San Isidro village in  Subic town, said Nigel Lontoc, assistant director of the Office of Civil Defense in Central Luzon.

Five people were also reported missing, one in Subic and four in Castilejos.
 
"As of now, it's still raining but it's not that as intense compared earlier this morning,” Ricarforte said.

Ricaforte said Subic was isolated from Olongapo City due to flooding.

1st Civil Relations Group chief Maj. Emmanuel Garcia said around 183 families or 698 individuals have been displaced in Barangay Sta Rita in Olongapo City.

The evacuees were staying at the Sta Rita Elementary School and Sta Rita High  School as of posting time, he said.

“Troops are still in the area providing assistance to civilians,” said Garcia.

In an interview on GMA News TV's “Balitanghali,” Subic Mayor Jefferson Khonghun said seven houses were buried in a landslide at Barangay Wawandue. — Amanda Fernandez/KBK, GMA News
