DepEd mulls makeup classes for 188,000 Zamboanga City students
(Updated 8 a.m.) - With classes having been suspended there for nearly two weeks, the Department of Education is mulling makeup classes for some 188,000 students in strife-torn Zamboanga City.
The 188,000 students are only in elementary and high school and do not include those in college and up, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported early Wednesday.
DepEd officials are considering their options for makeup classes especially if the fighting between government and Moro National Liberation Front forces drags on, the report said.
Since Sept. 9, the MNLF had engaged government forces in a standoff since taking civilian hostages.
Classes in all levels in the city had been suspended since the standoff started. The DepEd supervises classes up to the high school level.
On Tuesday night, Metro Manila-based teachers lighted candles for peace to return to Mindanao soonest.
Stress debriefing
Meanwhile, a separate report by dzBB's Juego Wednesday said the DepEd sent a team to Zamboanga City to help in the stress debriefing of children there.
The team includes a teacher, a guidance counselor, and a representative of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
The report said the DepEd was concerned for children who had been traumatized after hearing sounds of gunfire and explosions. —KG, GMA News
