Japanese Embassy honors individuals, group that helped strengthen PH-Japan ties
Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya on Friday underscored the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges in strengthening the long-standing relationship between the Philippines and Japan.
Speaking at an awarding ceremony in Manila on Friday, Endo said cooperation between the two countries should continue across a wide range of areas, including security, business, trade, investment, tourism and exchanges between their peoples.
“The foundation of our friendship and cooperation is our strong people-to-people ties,” Endo said.
He noted that these ties are built over many years by individuals and organizations working in different sectors, from those supporting Japanese businesses in the Philippines to experts of Philippine affairs within Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Endo also cited Filipino and Japanese women’s groups that have helped bring the two societies closer, as well as organizations promoting cultural exchanges through long-running initiatives such as bonsai.
“These relationships are the result of many years of dedication by individuals and organizations, and I believe it is important to recognize and celebrate those enduring friendships and partnerships,” he said.
During the ceremony, Endo presented the Ambassador’s Commendation to four individuals and one organization for their years of service to Philippines-Japan relations.
Among those honored was Nobuo Fujii of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines for supporting the Japanese business community and helping address its concerns.
Dr. Nora Torres of the Philippines-Japan Ladies Association was recognized for promoting cultural and social exchanges between Filipinos and Japanese.
Language educators Bendette McFarland and Thelma Salumbides were also honored for decades of teaching Filipino to Japanese diplomats, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the Philippines and its people.
The Philippine Bonsai Society received the commendation for promoting bonsai—the Japanese art of cultivating and shaping miniature trees—and strengthening cultural exchange through exhibitions, workshops and other activities.
“Today, we recognized four individuals and one organization from different backgrounds who have worked for many years to strengthen the ties between our two countries,” Endo said.
“In their respective capacities and across different sectors, they have made significant contributions to deepening our friendship in various ways,” he added.
Endo also commended those who have worked “quietly yet diligently” to strengthen bilateral ties, saying their efforts embodied the spirit of the 70th anniversary of Philippines-Japan friendship and their enduring partnership.
Japan and the Philippines are marking 70 years since the normalization of diplomatic relations on July 23, 1956.
The two governments designated 2026 as the Japan-Philippines Friendship Year under the theme, “Weaving the Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, Possibilities.” —KG, GMA News
