Show cause order issued vs shipping company over 'overloading' —DOTr's Dizon

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) issued a show cause order against a shipping company for suspected overloading, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon told reporters on Tuesday.

The show cause order was issued against Montenegro Shipping Lines, Inc., according to a report of Super Radyo dzBB’s Mao dela Cruz on Dobol B TV.

Dizon said Monday that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) was investigating a ship that sold tickets beyond its capacity.

He said the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) caught the vessel in Batangas. Dizon said the PCG did not allow the vessel, which was set to sail from Batangas to Romblon, to exceed its capacity.

The DOTr added that Dizon ordered compensation for the affected passengers.

“Nakakaawa din 'yung mga kababayan natin kasi may na-stranded. Obviously na-stranded sila kasi nagbenta ng mas maraming ticket 'yung shipping line compared sa allowable number of passengers and weight,” he said.

(Our fellow citizens are also pitiful because some of them were stranded. It’s obvious they were stranded because the shipping line sold more tickets than the allowable number of passengers and weight.) —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA Integrated News
