Around 60,000 Filipinos engaged in nationwide protests or prayer rallies for former president Rodrigo Duterte’s 80th birthday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday.
In an interview with Super Radyo dzBB, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said the PNP monitored about 200 rallies.
"Naging maayos at mapayapa naman sa pangkalahatan ang activities. Natapos ito ng wala naman tayong naitalang untoward incident,” Fajardo said.
(The activities were generally orderly and peaceful. It ended without any untoward incident.)
On the eve of his birthday, Duterte supporters held activities in Davao City, Cebu; Davao City; Manila; and Davao del Norte.
Last Friday, March 28, Duterte turned 80 while being detained at the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague, Netherlands.
The former president is facing charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court for the extrajudicial killings during his administration's deadly war on drugs that resulted in at least 6,000.
