Driver who fell asleep in moving pick-up told to explain by LTO
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show-cause order (SCO) against the owner of a pick-up truck after its driver allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel along Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.
According to Tina Panganiban-Perez's report on "24 Oras," a video incident has since gone viral online, which called the attention of the LTO.
The viral video showed the truck slowly cruising along Visayas Avenue and being trailed by several concerned motorists.
While some attempted to stop the car by throwing rocks along its path and honking their horns, they were unable to rouse the driver until moments later when a motorcycle rider woke him up by banging on the car window.
The incident resulted in damage to property after the vehicle hit a motorcycle.
“While it was stated in the video that the driver fell asleep, we want to know what really happened… kung nakatulog ba talaga at kung medical reason ay kailangan natin humingi ng katibayan dahil napakadelikado yung insidenteng yun, (if he really did fall asleep and if it was a medical reason, we need to ask for proof because it was a dangerous incident.)” said LTO Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza.
Mendoza added that it was still unclear whether the driver was the registered owner of the vehicle.
The registered owner of the truck was asked to present themselves to the LTO on April 4 to explain what happened.
“Failure to appear and submit the written comment/explanation as required shall be construed by this Office as a waiver of your rights to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand,” read the SCO.
