Threats to OFW tax privileges wrong, unjust -Kiko Pangilinan

Senatorial candidate Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan on Friday condemned proposals to revoke the tax privileges of overseas Filipino workers, calling them “wrong and deeply unjust.”

“OFWs are the backbone of our economy. Their hard work and sacrifices, often made at the cost of being away from their loved ones, contribute significantly to keeping the Philippine economy afloat,” said Pangilinan in a statement.

“To threaten them with the removal of their hard-earned privileges simply for exercising their right to free expression is wrong and deeply unjust.”

His remarks come after supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte proposed a “zero remittance week” to protest his detention at The Hague.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile warned that such action could have “adverse effects,” suggesting Congress might consider suspending OFWs’ tax privileges in response.

Pangilinan urged the government to approach the issue with “fairness and sensitivity,” emphasizing that free expression is fundamental to democracy.

“Rather than discouraging discussions, we should welcome the perspectives of our OFWs, as they offer valuable insights into the realities faced by millions of Filipinos abroad. Their voices should be heard, not silenced,” he said.

Instead of vilifying OFWs for speaking out, Pangilinan suggested the government listen to their concerns.

"Their experiences and perspectives offer valuable insights into the realities faced by millions of Filipinos abroad,” Pangilinan added. “It is through dialogue and understanding—not threats—that we can build a better future for our people.”

Meanwhile, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro clarified that Malacañang saw no reason to file charges against those behind the “zero remittance week” plan. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
