PALACE ASKS WHO WILL BENEFIT

Sara Duterte on calls for Marcos to resign: One has to step down if there is failure to show leadership

Vice President Sara Duterte has said a country's leader should resign from one's post if he or she fails to show the people that he or she can think clearly and can lead.

According to the report of GMA Integrated News' Mariz Umali on Monday, the Vice President attended the gathering at The Hague of the supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte ahead of his birthday.

Supporters chanted “Marcos resign!” to which Sara responded, “Kayo ang nagsabi niyan, hindi ako ah (you were the ones who said that, not me).”

“Bakit ba kailangan magresign? Dahil hindi mo pinapakita sa taumbayan na maayos kang mag isip at kaya mo ang mamuno,” Duterte added.

(Why should you resign? Because you failed to show the people that you can think clearly and that you can lead.)

Sought for comment, Malacañang asked who will benefit once the President resigns from post.

“Kung pinagreresign po nila ang Pangulo, sino ba ang makikinabang (If they are asking for the President's resignation, who will benefit from it)?” Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said.

Castro insisted that the President is only implementing the law.

''Kahit sabihin po ni VP Sara, ‘Oh, kayo nagsabi niyan,’ siya pa rin po ang makikinabang. Sasabihin po ba na walang kakayanang mamuno, papaano po natin masasabi ito kung ang pinapairal po natin ay ang batas at very transparent po tayo sa anumang mga transaksiyon,'' Castro said.

(Even if VP Sara said, 'You're the one who said that,' she will still benefit from it. She's saying that the President has no skill to lead, how can we say that when we are implementing the law and we are very transparent with our transactions.)

''Hindi po mas kakayanin ng isang tao na mamuno na maraming inililihim, maraming itinatago, at hindi nagpapakita ng anumang dokumento, more particularly about the funds,'' she added.

(Someone who's not transparent and who has a lot of things to hide, more particularly about the funds, would not be able to lead.)

Rodrigo Duterte is currently under the custody of the International Criminal Court following his arrest in the Philippines on March 11.

The Vice President also reportedly said her father is concerned about the timeline and is asking about the campaign of their senatorial bets in the Philippines.

The supporters called for the release and return of Rodrigo Duterte to the Philippines.

“Ibalik ninyo lang siya sa Pilipinas. Ituloy ninyo lang ‘yung kaso walang problema. Ibalik ninyo lang siya,” Duterte said.

(Return him to the country. Proceed with the case, that’s not a problem. But just return him.)

The Vice President is expected to visit her father at the detention facility today.

The hearing on the confirmation of his charges has been set for September 23.

Meanwhile, the Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered both the prosecution and the defense teams  to disclose evidence by next month, ahead of the scheduled confirmation of charges hearing in September.

It has asked the prosecution to submit details of their evidence and their witnesses by April 4.

The chamber also asked the defense if they need to conduct an investigation prior to the confirmation of charges hearing as well as if they will present evidence and witnesses during the trial. —Joahna Lei Casilao and Anna Felicia Bajo/AOL, GMA Integrated News
