Imee on Alyansa campaign sorties amid Duterte arrest: Naiilag ako pumunta

Presidential sister and Senator Imee Marcos admitted Friday that the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte affected her participation in the campaign sorties of Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas' senatorial slate.

Interviewed on Unang Balita, Marcos was asked about the dynamics in Alyansa, the administration's ticket, considering that some of the candidates expressed support to Duterte amid his arrest.

"Hindi pa kami nag-uusap ng ibang kandidato pero ako naiilag ako na pumunta dito sa mga Alyansa at iba pang pangangampanya. Ako ay iikot lang sa lokal," Marcos said.

(I have not spoken with other candidates yet but I've been avoiding to attend Alyansa sorties and other campaigns. I'll just go around local areas.)

"Pero ang mahalaga ngayon ay talagang malaman natin... bakit natin isusuko ang kapwa Pilipino sa dayuhan... Ang pinaka-importante talaga alamin natin kung tama ba itong nangyari sa ating bansa na nagiging halos probinsya na lamang tayo ng The Hague," she added, referring to the Duterte's detention in The Hague, Netherlands to face charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

(But what's important now is that we should really know… why we're giving up our fellow Filipinos to foreigners… The most important thing is that we know if what happened to our country was right, that we're almost becoming a province of The Hague.)

At a press conference before Alyansa’s campaign sortie in Trece Martires, Cavite, campaign manager and Navotas City. Rep. Toby Tiangco said the reelectionist senator has yet to formally inform him of her decision.

Regardless of her choice, Tiangco said he will respect Marcos’ decision.

“Wala naman siyang sinabi if that is her stand and we will respect her stand. So mas mabuti na ngang sinabi niya 'yon, at least alam namin ang stand niya tungkol dito sa Alyansa. But formally she has not informed me but if that's her official statement then I will take it as is,” Tiangco said.

(She has not informed me yet if that is her stand and we will respect her stand. It is better for her to air her sentiments. At least we know her stand about the administration’s alliance. But formally, she has not informed me. But if that’s her official statement, then I will take it as is.)

Last week, Alyansa senatorial candidates voiced their sentiments on Duterte's arrest.

Former Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson admitted that the recent development has been affecting the campaign of the administration slate given that Duterte has a lot of supporters.

Lacson, however, urged the public that instead of escalating "divisiveness," they should help in easing the tension.

"I'll be honest with you. Siyempre may epekto. Hindi natin maipagkakaila na maraming supporters si FPRRD. Rightly or wrongly, siyempre nandoon ang kanilang sentiment para sa kanya. But tayo naman, instead na tumulong tayong makadagdag pa tayo sa pag-escalate ng divisiveness, mas maganda sigurong tumulong tayong mag-deescalate," Lacson said.

(I'll be honest with you. Of course, there's an effect. We can't deny that FPRRD has a lot of supporters. Rightly or wrongly, their sentiments are there for him. But for us, instead of escalating divisiveness, let us help in deescalating it.)

ACT-CIS party-list Representative Erwin Tulfo said public consultation could be done to hear the clamor of Filipinos.

Tulfo added that Duterte would remain innocent until proven guilty of the accusations thrown against him. He stressed that the public should "let justice take its due course" on the matter.

"We have other problems that we have to deal now," Tulfo said.

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay echoed Tulfo's remark of trusting the legal process on the issue.

She said it is not for them to answer if the arrest made was correct, noting that it was a legal question. — VDV/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
