Senatorial bet Jayvee Hinlo seeks Data Privacy Act amendment
Senatorial candidate Jesus “Jayvee” Hinlo has underscored the need for amendments to the Data Privacy Act and the Bank Secrecy Law to bolster the country’s fight against corruption.
In a Facebook post, the PDP-Laban bet pointed out his proposed revisions to empower the Office of the Ombudsman to access critical documents as evidence against corrupt government officials without requiring a court order.
“Sa ating laban kontra koprapsyon, ang mga senador at congressmen ay dapat rebyuhin at amyendahan ang Data Privacy act at ang Bank Secrery Law para payagan ang opisina ng Ombudsman na maghanap ng mga dokumentong ebidensya laban sa mga tiwaling opisyal ng gobyerno na hindi na kailangan ng court order,” he said.
(In our fight against corruption, senators and congressmen must review and amend the Data Privacy Act and the Bank Secrecy Law. These changes would allow the Ombudsman to gather documentary evidence against corrupt officials without court approval.)
Beyond tackling corruption, Hinlo also laid out his economic platform, emphasizing job creation in both government and private sectors through industrialization, large-scale farming, and fisheries management.
Hinlo believes that the Philippines must establish its factories to manufacture essential items such as weapons, airplanes, vehicles, ships, machinery, computers, and pharmaceuticals. To encourage local manufacturing, he proposes an amendment to the Procurement Law that would require the government to prioritize locally produced goods, even if they are 10% more expensive than foreign-made alternatives.
He asserts that this policy would incentivize businesses to establish factories in the country and supply the government with locally made products.

As an advocate for large-scale, state-managed farming to generate employment in rural areas— Hinlo said national and local governments should develop agricultural enterprises on public lands and rented private lands, creating jobs in farming, warehousing, rice mills, factories, distribution centers, and retail outlets.
Extending his state-led economic approach to the fishing industry, he proposes government participation in commercial fishing, seafood processing, storage, and distribution to generate more employment opportunities for small-scale fishermen.
He also suggests that government employees in state-managed farming and fishing operations should not be required to pass the Civil Service Examination, except for managerial positions.
Furthermore, he aims to integrate subjects on Philippine patriotism and ethics from elementary school to college. —Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
