Japan navy chief visits Manila, to enhance cooperation with PH

The head of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Admiral Saito Akira visited Manila Wednesday where he discussed defense cooperation with Philippine Navy leaders.

In a statement Thursday, the Philippine Navy said its chief Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta and Akira discussed modernization efforts, joint maritime security initiatives, and strategic partnership.

“Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to address both traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges, guided by shared values and mutual interests in upholding regional stability,” the PN said.

The two navies also signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) as Ezpeleta noted the importance of deepening naval cooperation in light of the evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific region.

“In the face of growing hurdles, and transformations in our maritime security environment, may this day serve as a reminder of our capacity to draw upon the wealth of opportunities that can be explored between our navies to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Ezpeleta said.

According to the Navy, Saito’s visit emphasized the enduring commitment of the Philippines and Japan to improve maritime security and regional stability.

The commitment serves as a testament to the strong defense ties between the Philippines and Japan as they push for a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, the Navy added. —Joviland Rita/RF, GMA Integrated News
