ICC to give reparations to victims once accused is found guilty
The International Criminal Court (ICC) will provide reparations to victims of crimes once an accused is found guilty, according to a report on Unang Balita.
Based on the video explainer of the ICC, this includes the giving of monetary compensation, rehabilitation, or medical support.
Victims may receive this individually or as a group.
Due to this, the ICC can freeze the assets of the accused while the trial is ongoing.
In case the assets of an accused are not enough for reparations, the ICC has a fund which it may use for reparations for victims.
“In many cases, the impact of the crime can be immense, and the guilty person doesn’t have enough financial resources to compensate for the potentially large number of victims,” the ICC said.
“This is why states have also created a trust fund for victims, financed by voluntary contributions, to assist in executing the reparations ordered by the judges,” it added.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte is currently detained at The Hague, Netherlands pending his trial for crimes against humanity over killings during the drug war.
Duterte faced the ICC for the first time last week through a video conference.
The next hearing on the confirmation of the charges has been set for Sept. 23, 2025.
Based on government records, around 6,200 drug suspects were killed during the Duterte administration's anti-drug operations. Human rights organizations, however, say that the number may reach 30,000 due to the unreported related slays.—Joahna Lei Casilao/AOL, GMA Integrated News
