Election gun ban violations reached 1,662, Comelec says
The number of people arrested for violating the election gun ban since January 12 has reached 1,662, data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed.
Of this number, 1,558 were civilians, according to a report by Christian Maño on Dobol B TV on Saturday.
The others arrested were:
- 31 security guards;
- 11 members of the Philippine National Police;
- 9 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines; and
- 9 foreigners and others.
Most of the violations were apprehended in police response and patrol operations.
A total of 1,677 firearms have been confiscated by authorities since the election period began on January 12, Comelec data also showed.
The breakdown is as follows:
- 1,529 small firearms;
- 65 replica;
- 43 light weapons; and
- 40 explosives.
A total of 7,218 ammunition or bullets were also confiscated.
To prevent election-related violence, authorities have been enforcing strict security measures, including a gun ban and the establishment of checkpoints.
At checkpoints, only visual inspections are allowed. Police are prohibited from opening a vehicle’s trunk or glove compartment, as well as dismounting or frisking passengers.
The election period and gun ban will be in effect from January 12 to June 11, 2025.
