Australia issues travel advisory against PH amid security concerns

Citing security concerns, the Australian government on Wednesday issued a travel advisory to its citizens  visiting the Philippines.

According to the advisory, which remains active on Thursday, travelers are warned to “exercise a high degree of caution in the Philippines overall due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime.”

“We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in the Philippines. There’s an increased risk of demonstrations and civil unrest following recent events,” the advisory read, adding to avoid protests and large gatherings “as they may turn violent.”

The advisory also stated that terrorist attacks could occur anywhere in the Philippines, with airports, public transportation, hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, major events, places of worship, and tourist areas could be targeted.

“Do not travel to central and western Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Sulu Archipelago, and the southern Sulu Sea area due to the very high threat of terrorism and kidnapping,” it added. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
