PNP: Situation 'generally peaceful,' ‘under control’ after Duterte arrest

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday that the situation across the country remains “generally peaceful” and “under control” following the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
“The PNP reports that the overall peace and order situation across the country remains generally peaceful following the departure of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to The Hague, Netherlands,” the PNP said in a statement.
“As of today, the situation across the country remains under control. The PNP assures the public of its continued vigilance and commitment to maintaining peace and security nationwide,” it added.
According to the PNP, its alert status has been raised to heightened alert nationwide starting 5 p.m. Tuesday as part of its standard security measures.
Cops have been deployed in key areas to support public safety efforts and ensure order, the PNP said. PNP units remain prepared to help as needed and respond to any developments.
PNP chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil said that security measures are still in place to maintain order.
“The PNP continues to monitor the situation closely and is fully prepared to respond to any developments. Our personnel have been strategically deployed to ensure peace and security nationwide,” he said.
On Tuesday morning, authorities served a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Duterte for crimes against humanity in connection with his drug war.
