BI to launch new system for advance passenger screening in March

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Monday said it is launching a new system that would allow authorities to screen passengers prior to their arrival in the country.
According to the BI, the Philippines’ Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) is expected to strengthen the country’s border security when it is launched this month as it will help authorities identify potential security threats and facilitate seamless entry procedures.
The APIS is a globally recognized system used by countries worldwide to conduct advance screening of passengers before their arrival.
“This system will enable us to screen passengers in advance, improving risk assessment and expediting the processing of legitimate travelers,” said Melvin Mabulac, BI APIS Operations Center (APOC) Chief and Deputy Spokesperson.
The Immigration Bureau is set to conduct a pilot test of the APIS with the country’s major airlines that include Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific as part of their preparations. The agency likewise held a connectivity test with INTERPOL’s I-24/7 database to ensure access to international security watchlists.
Further, the BI said it is engaging with key stakeholders, including INTERPOL, airline representatives, and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UN OCT), to ensure the seamless integration of APIS with existing systems.
“This initiative marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to modernize immigration processes,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.
“With APIS, we are not only strengthening security but also ensuring a more efficient and hassle-free experience for travelers,” Viado said. — Sundy Locus/RF, GMA Integrated News
