DOJ, DSWD sign MOU on referral system for financial, psychosocial support

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that seeks to create a referral system for individuals in crisis situations to get aid and psychosocial support.
It was signed by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian, among others.
“This MOU is institutionalizing a referral system that will ensure that those who turn to the DOJ for legal assistance can also receive financial, medical, and psychosocial support,” Remulla said in his speech.
“With this program, individuals in crisis situations will not only have legal aid but also the means to pursue claims,” he added.
Under the memorandum, Assistant State Prosecutor Joan Carla Guevarra said clients of the DOJ Action Center may be referred to the DSWD.
“Kunyari, biktima ng rape… kailangan po niya ng psychosocial support like therapy, pera para sa medication, financial assistance para po sa pag sampa. Pwede din po ‘yung medical assistance. Funeral assistance din po,” she said.
(For example, a rape victim… needs psychosocial support that includes therapy, money for medication, financial assistance in order to file cases. He or she can also seek medical assistance. Funeral assistance as well.)

“Anything po na sa assessment ng social worker upon our referral pwede po maibigay sa biktima po,” she added.
(Anything that can be assessed by the social worker upon our referral can be provided to the victim.)
Guevarra said victims could receive up to P10,000 in assistance in every 3 months.
“This is subject po sa approval and assessment ng social worker (this is subject to the assessment of the social worker),” she said.
For his part, Gatchalian welcomed the signing of the MOU.
“When those in crisis are unable to pursue justice, they are also denied the opportunity to fulfill, to achieve full development in all aspects. Rest assured that the DSWD is fully committed to supporting the DOJ in this endeavor in helping individuals experiencing crisis to pursue justice,” he said. — RF, GMA Integrated News
