Filipinos urged to participate in fire prevention campaign

Vice President Sara Duterte has called on Filipinos to take proactive steps to ensure fire safety in their homes, schools, and communities as the nation began the observance of Fire Prevention Month.

In her video message, the Vice President expressed solidarity with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and fire volunteers in advocating for measures to protect lives and properties from devastating fires.

She said that while fires cause serious destruction, they can often be prevented through proper awareness and preparedness.

“I encourage everyone to support the Bureau of Fire Protection, local governments, and volunteer organizations in spreading fire safety awareness and fostering a culture of preparedness,” Duterte said.

“Through this, we can safeguard ourselves, our families, and our communities from the dangers of fire.”

She also called for the integration of fire safety education into homes, schools, and workplaces.

“Every Filipino has a responsibility to be informed, vigilant, and actively participate in fire safety drills in their communities. Together, we can build a nation that is more prepared, safer, and more resilient.”

The BFP earlier said most fire incidents reported since January this year were due to electrical issues.

From January 1 to February 27, a total of 2,307 fire incidents were recorded, and 625 of these cases were caused by electrical issues.

Electrical issues were also the most common cause of fire in the same period last year, with 1,181 cases.

A total of 74 fatalities were reported this year, including 70 civilians and four members of law enforcement agencies, the BFP data showed.

There were 209 injured persons reported, including 190 civilians, 12 BFP firefighters, five members of law enforcement agencies, and two volunteers.

Meanwhile, the BFP opened the Fire Prevention Month with a program at Biñan Football Stadium on Saturday, where a memorandum of understanding was signed between BFP and Pag-IBIG Fund to ensure affordable and accessible housing programs for the agency's personnel.

''With the signing of this MOU, the BFP and Pag-IBIG Fund reaffirm their commitment to providing fire personnel with the opportunity to own a home, ensuring security and stability for their families,'' the BFP said in a press release.

In Valenzuela City, the local BFP conducted a motorcade to raise fire safety awareness, according to a ''24 Oras Weekend'' report.
